The Scarlets

Shelter, catalouge. Tr√łndelag Art center / Nordenfjeldske Museum of Arts and Crafts / KIT. 1997

By Hanne L. O. Kristoffersen

I searched through history for women, from their words and doings I wanted to create contours of whom they where. I searched through the history of Trondheim, because it is also my history. I searched through books of authority, with pages packed with words, I searched through history available for the people. I found women written in small letters, as wifes, mothers, daughters. I found their existence in brackets in a neat jungle of big headings. I found that their prescense, their lives, has not made any traces in the books, in the writings, in the history book my daughter puts on her desk. I found the city of Trondheim has been under the Christian faith for 1000 years, and wich has written it`s history in the light of it`s faith. I found that in this faith, women are regarded as sinners, and therefore as an everlasting peril and temptress, dressed in purple and scarlet. And that the word is power, and the history exists of words.
